An engagement ring is one of the most valued gifts you can give or receive. It’s not only a symbol of love, but the commitment and loyalty two people share . While shopping for an engagement ring can feel overwhelming, it should be exciting, inspiring, and fun.

Step 1: Shop with a Reputable Jeweler Who You Can Trust

This is is the most important factor when shopping for an engagement ring. It is very important to work with a jeweler you trust, who up holds integrity, stands behind their merchandise and offers the best customer service. Great ways to find jewelers who hold such qualities is by asking for referrals from friends or reading reviews online from the following websites: Facebook, Google, Yelp, and Jewelers of America.

Step 2: Determine a Budget

Before stepping a foot in a store, establish a healthy, yet reasonable and SMART budget. In 2015 it was reported that the average engagement ring cost between $5,885 to $6,600. The best way to avoid sticker shock is to do your research before meeting with the first jeweler.

Step 3: Educate Yourself on the 4Cs:

Do not make the mistake and think all diamonds are the same, because they are not. Diamonds in all their glory come in an array of qualities. What determines the value of a diamond is its cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.  This is what we call the 4Cs.   Learn more by reading GIA’s Quick Guide to Understanding the 4Cs.

Step 4: Know What She Wants

Pay close attention to your lady. Be aware of her style of clothes, jewelry, and shoes and you will be surprised on how quickly you’ll see a pattern in what she likes. If you have a hard time nailing down her style, reach out to her friends. See if they have any knowledgeable insight on what she would like as an engagement ring. If you reach another dead end, then research her Pinterest page. Pinterest is an excellent tool to help you discover what she loves.

Step 5: Find Out Her Finger Size

Just imagine, the big day is here and you are ready to propose to your honey. Just when you pop the question and she says “Yes!” you can’t get the ring on her finger. Your palms immediately start to sweat and your heart begins to race, and you become overwhelmed with anxiety and embarrassment. We do not want this to happen to you, so please find out her finger size.

If you are clueless as to what size she is please follow the tips below:

#1. Ask her best friends and family members if they know her finger size.

#2 When she is not home, sneak a ring out of her jewelry box and take it to a jeweler to have it sized.

#3  If you only have a few minutes to remove the ring from the jewelry box, then grab a soft bar of soap and press the ring into the soap to make an indentation. Take the bar of soap to the jeweler and they will be able to obtain a measurement from the indentation.

Step 6: Insure! Insure! Insure!

It is so important to have the ring added to your insurance policy as soon as it leaves the jewelry store. Life in full of unpredictable events. Be smart and have the ring insured to cover lost, theft, and damages.
